Bill Gates has been talking about how artificial intelligence (AI) can be a big help in reaching climate goals. AI can make technology and electricity grids work more efficiently. Even though AI needs a lot of datacenters, which use up energy, the way AI can improve efficiency might mean less overall energy use in the end.
At a conference in London organized by Breakthrough Energy, Gates talked about how AI could help save a lot of energy. He mentioned that even though datacenters increase energy demand, the improvements in efficiency from AI could actually lower total energy consumption. He wasn’t too worried about AI’s impact on climate, saying that the increase in energy use from datacenters might only be about 2% to 2.5% of the global demand.
According to Gates, big tech companies are going to keep pouring money into green energy. They’re not just okay with paying more for green energy; they’re also putting money into new technologies that could help increase the amount of green energy available. For example, Breakthrough Energy has invested in over 100 companies working on new energy solutions.
Microsoft is a key player in AI and has been incorporating AI into its products, like the Windows operating system with features branded as Copilot. They’re also big backers of OpenAI and are committed to developing AI in ways that consider the environment.
Gates is hopeful about AI and green tech but also cautious about the challenges ahead. He’s worried that we might not develop green electricity fast enough to stop using fossil fuels. This could delay hitting the goal of net zero emissions by as much as 15 years.
Gates believes we need to find a middle ground in using AI to help the environment while also being careful about its impacts. This includes thinking about the extra emissions from building new datacenters and the energy used by devices like computers and phones, which might still depend on non-renewable sources.
Learn how Bill Gates sees AI improving energy efficiency and how tech companies are investing in green technologies, even as we face challenges in meeting climate targets by 2050.
